One of Canada's busiest GA and business airports will soon be transformed into rows of featureless warehouse buildings. Buttonville Airport is a privately owned facility just north of Toronto and is a significant reliever airport for nearby Pearson International. It was sold to a developer about 10 years ago. It's operated under a lease since then, but several large tenants have moved knowing the inevitable will come. The lease on the 169-acre property ends Nov. 30 and will not be renewed, and there was a broad assumption that the developer, Cadillac Fairview, would create the kind of mixed-use community or shopping center for which it is known.

But according to blogto it would appear the site will be almost entirely covered with single-level steel industrial warehouse buildings to meet Canada's largest city's seemingly insatiable demand for that kind of space. The site will be home to 2.775 million square feet of covered storage in 10 new buildings, some of them enormous. There will be at least one reminder of the airport's rich 70-year history. The 3900-foot main runway will be one of the main roads in the development.
