A man who apparently claimed to be an Al Qaeda terrorist and attempted to hijack an Alitalia MD-80 on Wednesday has been identified as a former policeman being treated for schizophrenia. The flight, from Bologna to Paris, landed safely after diverting to Lyon, and nobody was hurt. The man was armed only with a remote control device like those used for a television, police said.
