The Society of Aviation and Flight Educators announced Friday that Executive Director Doug Stewart will retire when his contract expires in February. Stewart was among the founding members of the organization, which formed in 2009. Stewart was SAFE’s first chair and was named executive director in November 2011. “I fully expect to remain connected to all the wonderful people who have been involved with and supported SAFE over the last five and a half years,” Stewart said. “I also intend to remain active as a flight instructor and active in SAFE.”

Stewart, who was named National CFI of the Year in 2004, was recognized for accomplishments including the SAFE Pilot Training Reform Symposium in 2011 and the Pilot Proficiency Project, which holds simulator training sessions for pilots at regional events. “It is due in large part to Doug Stewart’s vision and commitment to excellence in aviation education that SAFE is well positioned for growth in the coming years,” said Donna Wilt, chair of the organization’s board of directors. “He will be greatly missed by everyone at SAFE.” A committee will begin the search for a new executive director. Former board chair John Dorcey will serve as interim executive director.
