Key Takeaways:

  • The FAA's rule changes on October 5, 2009, drastically reduced the number of authorized aeronautical chart distributors from about 2,000 to under 300, threatening to price many local FBOs out of the business.
  • ChartDealer.com, initially impacted by these regulations, saw an opportunity amidst the industry upheaval.
  • Co-founders Kevin Laufer and Andrew Hartman believe they have found a strategy to not only keep their own chart business operational but also to leverage the new FAA rules to increase the overall number of physical chart sellers available to customers.

When the FAA on October 5, 2009, changed the rules that determine to whom they’ll sell aeronautical charts, the number of distributors shrank from about 2,000 to less than 300, overnight.
