Five Star General “Jack” Dailey To Receive Prestigious Aviation Industry Award

The “Living Legends of Aviation” will present the “Steven F. Udvar Hazy” Award to General Dailey, former Director of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum at the 15th Annual “Living Legends of Aviation Awards.” Hosted by John Travolta, with Harrison Ford presenting the “Aviation Legacy Award,” the awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton on January 19th, 2018.

General Dailey’s mission while Director was to expand the size and scope of the museum and to increase public outreach. In 2003, the museum opened the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA where two hangars lodge over 300 aircraft and space artifacts. A later extension is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the museum’s collection.

Before museum director, General Daily served as Director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He retired from the US Marines Corps after an exemplary 36 year career. General Dailey served both as Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Chief of Staff. A pilot, he logged over 7,000 flight hours and flew 450 missions in Viet Nam.

General Dailey has earned numerous military decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star. Among other honors, he has been inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame and the International Aviation Hall of Fame. The Annual Living Legends of Aviation Awards are produced by Kitty Hawk Air Academy, a 501-c-3 organization, teaching children and inspiring aviation’s next generation.
