Icon Aircraft is celebrating the “significant milestone” of building its 100th airplane and predicting a bright if somewhat more restrained future for the stylish little amphib than the original marketing hype laid out. “It took us longer than anticipated to get here, but this is just the beginning," said President and COO Thomas Wieners. “We remain focused on bringing adventure and sport flying to experienced pilots as well as those who’ve always dreamed of flying their own airplane.”

After years of delays in government approvals, design and production hiccups, the company says it began to hit its stride in early 2018 and started “delivering to customers in earnest.” It delivered the most light sport aircraft of any manufacturer in 2018. The 100th A5 went to an owner in Key West and he would appear to fit Icon’s target demographic to a T. “I’ve been following the ICON A5 for years, and I was hooked as soon as I took my first flight,” Icon quoted the unnamed new owner as saying. "I can’t wait to fly with my family and soak in the beauty of this world with the windows out.”
