As spring approaches and the flying season starts warming up for much of the country, getting back to flying will require some review of the basics. Weekender found some pilot seminars on SocialFlight, plus some fun outings as well. On Saturday, the Wiscasset Annual Chili Cookoff will take place at the Wiscasset airport in Maine. The event will open with a safety seminar on fuel management and the cook-off will start about noon. Also Saturday, EAA Chapter 35 at San Geronimo Airpark in Texas will hold its open house, rescheduled from January. Join the community for a hangar-to-hangar hayride and progressive lunch. Nominal donations are requested; those who fly in can attend for free. See a variety of aircraft building and restoration projects in the works.

Mid Island Air Service at Long Island Mac Arthur Airport in New York will host a safety talk on Saturday, “Taming the Crosswind.” John Cutcher, a pilot examiner, CFI and military and airline pilot, will discuss several aspects of this essential skill. On Sunday, Bob Hoover and the producers of “Flying the Feathered Edge,” a documentary about the legendary aviator, will appear at a screening of the film Sunday in downtown San Luis Obispo, California. The film is among the documentaries slated to run at the San Luis Obispo Film Festival, which runs through the weekend. For more events in the coming week, visit SocialFlight.
