Airbus is moving forward with a plan to develop modular passenger sleeping berths that could be installed in the cargo hold of the A330 by 2020. The modules will be easily interchangeable with standard cargo containers, and the changeover could be completed during a typical turnaround, according to Airbus. “This approach to commercial air travel is a step change towards passenger comfort,” said Geoff Pinner, who is heading up the project. “We have already received very positive feedback from several airlines on our first mock-ups.” The fully enclosed bunks will be installed in two tiers on either side of an aisle.

The lower deck will also include customizable open spaces that can be used for socializing, work, dining, conferences, medical care, storage, or play space for children. There are no windows. Airbus said it is also considering developing the modules for the A350 XWB airliner. Zodiac Aerospace is working with Airbus to build the compartments. The two companies already produce crew-rest facilities for the lower deck. This project builds on that experience, Airbus said.
