Amazon’s Kindle e-reader has proven to be a hot seller, so it was just a matter of time before someone adapted it for displaying approach plates. The Kindle and Kindle 2 are too small for this purpose, so Gold Seal Ventures has adapted the new Kindle DX, which is much larger and has a greater grayscale range than the early e-readers did. Gold Seal is formally launching the Kindle DX at AirVenture this week, with demos and improvements on its web site, AirBrief.com.
AVweb tried out the Kindle DX and prepared this detailed video on the product. Bottom line: The plates are readable and relatively easy to find on the device, and although the DX itself is a little pricey at $480, AirBrief’s data service promises to me more affordable than other electronic chart sources.
