Redbird Flight Simulations introduced GIFT Instrument Rating, a companion training program for Redbird simulators that is uses AI-monitored lessons and feedback to teach instrument concepts, at AirVenture 2019. GIFT Instrument Rating is the next phase of the company’s Guided Independent Flight Training (GIFT) program, which debuted in 2017. Like its predecessor, GIFT Private Pilot, GIFT Instrument Rating is organized into modules, with each lesson including a preflight video and written brief, a simulator mission with AI-powered, real-time coaching and corrections, a post-flight debrief with scoring based on the FAA Airman Certification Standards, and post-flight review and trend tracking.
“GIFT assumes the tedious role of introducing students to concepts and developing proficiency through repetition, allowing flight instructors to focus more on evaluating skills like judgment and decision-making,” said Redbird VP of Marketing Josh Harnagel. “Used regularly, GIFT Instrument Rating has the potential to revolutionize the way that we conduct instrument training.” According to Redbird, customizable options allow for hundreds of variations and settings for each approach type and maneuver along with a “Surprise Me” feature that randomizes the settings. The program was developed for use on any Redbird training device.
In addition to GIFT Instrument Rating, the company also introduced Redbird Corvus, a product designed to mimic ADS-B In on the company’s training devices. Corvus is capable of broadcasting own-ship position, attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) and Traffic Information Services-Broadcast (TIS-B) information. Redbird says it is currently developing Corvus weather and airspace information and will make those features available in future updates.
