One person died but two others were uninjured in a midair collision between a Piper Cheyenne and another unidentified aircraft near Canada’s capital city of Ottawa on Sunday. The Cheyenne pilot reported the touch to ATC and did not declare an emergency. “Somebody hit the bottom side of my aircraft,” the unidentified pilot told the terminal controller at Ottawa in audio captured by LiveATC.net (starts at 14:50). The Cheyenne was headed to a GA airport in Carp, a suburb of Ottawa. The pilot reported that the collision affected the right landing gear of the turboprop twin and triggered a warning light indicating the gear was unlocked.
The Cheyenne was vectored to McDonald-Cartier International Airport where tower controllers used binoculars to inspect the gear. The aircraft landed without incident. Meanwhile, police cordoned off a rural area near Carp where the other aircraft crashed. The pilot was killed in the crash.
