An Mi-8 helicopter crashed on a frozen river in Siberia Thursday, with at least 10 reported dead and 15 injured. Rescue crews with snowmobiles are at the site, about six miles from the Igarka airport, with two Mi-8 helicopters heading there carrying doctors and rescuers, according to The Siberia Times. Passengers reported that the crew of three died in the crash on the Yenisei River. The helicopter, operated by the Russian airline, lost radio contact before the crash, the Times reported.
The helicopter was transporting workers to the Vankor, one of Russia’s largest oilfields operating under state-owned company Rosneft, Reuters reported. It’s not clear if the aircraft had departed Igarka or another airport. The oilfield is about 80 miles west of Igarka. “Causes of the incident are being investigated,” the company said in Reuters’ report.
