AOPA has brought back its “Homecoming” fly-in at its headquarters in Frederick, Maryland, and this week posted instructions to ensure that pilots are prepared for the local traffic and procedures for the Oct. 4 event. “Flying in doesn’t mean winging it,” AOPA said on its website. “Do your homework … to ensure you’re safe and legal.” Besides reviewing the traffic pattern and local procedures, pilots flying VFR must take the FAA’s online course that outlines procedures for operation in the Washington, D.C., Special Flight Rules Area. The free event offers seminars, exhibits, food, and social events for AOPA members and all pilots.
The schedule for the day includes an aerial demo by Red Bull Air Race pilot Michael Goulian and a pilot town hall with AOPA President Mark Baker. The Frederick fly-in is one of seven AOPA fly-ins held around the country this year. The final one will be Nov. 8 at Malcolm McKinnon Airport in St. Simons, Georgia.
