Key Takeaways:

  • The FAA and the State of Colorado have partnered to install cameras on 13 AWOS stations in Colorado as part of the FAA's weather camera safety program.
  • This $226,000 agreement represents the first time the FAA Weather Camera Program, which began in 1999 and previously only operated in Alaska, will expand outside that state.
  • The new cameras will provide pilots with real-time visual weather conditions, particularly useful for planning flights over the Colorado Rockies, in addition to existing AWOS data.

The FAA has signed an agreement with the State of Colorado Division of Aeronautics to install cameras on 13 AWOS stations in the state as part of the agency’s weather camera safety program. Under the $226,000 reimbursable agreement, the FAA will assist with camera installations and the state of Colorado will own and maintain the cameras. Installation is expected to begin in the spring of 2020.

“The 13 Colorado cameras will be the first to be integrated into the FAA Weather Camera Program outside of Alaska,” the agency said in a statement. “In addition to the accurate weather information they receive from AWOS, pilots planning to fly above the Colorado Rockies will soon have the ability to see real-time weather conditions along their routes before they depart their airports.”

The FAA’s weather camera safety program began in 1999 and was designed to provide pilots with near real-time visual weather information. The program currently includes 230 cameras, all located in Alaska. Camera images, which are available at avcams.faa.gov, update every 10 minutes.
