Summer vacation goes by fast, but if you know any kids age 12 to 18 who need something to do, AeroCamp might provide an option. The program, developed by the Flight School Association of North America, is offered at about 20 local flight schools around the country. The camps generally run for five days, Monday to Friday, from about 9 to 5. Many flight schools offer both beginner and advanced options, with a chance to learn about airplanes, aviation careers and the aerospace industry. Every camper can fly an airplane if they want to, but it’s not required. “It’s a great way to get young kids involved and excited about aviation,” says Jim White, who runs the AeroCamp at Double Eagle Aviation in Tucson. “It really is a fun program.”
White said his flight school has had great success with the camp, and now is working on an advanced program that will take kids up to their first solo. The camps cost about $500 to $600 for the full week. “Each program takes advantage of what’s available in their area,” White said. At his airport, the students visit a nearby air museum, an Air National Guard unit, the control tower, the airport fire station and more.
