A new partnership will result in the resumption of production of Liberty Aerospace’s XL2 two-place touring airplane. Discovery Aviation has merged with Liberty and Liberty principals are joining them to make the resumption of production possible. “Combining the expertise and experience of the two organizations will result in a stronger and more capable entity,” Discovery CEO Rick Cunliffe said in a news release. The Liberty, which is already certified in 50 countries, will be manufactured alongside the Discovery 201, “a multi role, twin-engine utility aircraft,” that AVweb featured in a video from Sun ‘n Fun 2013.
The last we heard of Liberty was that it had a deal to sell some airplanes to China in 2012 but Paul Bartlett, the now-former CEO of Liberty Aerospace, said this is the right deal for the company. “We’ve been seeking a strategic investor with the financial commitment to build a sustainable business,” he said. Liberty also brought an FAA production certificate to the table. Both aircraft are on display at Sun ‘n Fun booth number MD-2.
